The EU wants to steal the Internet

The UN is going to try to steal the internet. (via Slashdot):

Old allies in world politics, representatives from the UK and US sat just feet away from each other, but all looked straight ahead as Hendon explained the EU had decided to end the US government’s unilateral control of the internet and put in place a new body that would now run this revolutionary communications medium.

I’ve blogged before about this apocalyptic scenario. I’m no uber Internet geek, but I really don’t know how it’s possible for another organization to forcibly take over the root level servers without physically siezing the boxes. Maybe that’s what they intend to do.

Instapundit has posted a reader’s email asking some incisive questions:

It’s like I posted to Slashdot: why would the EU and the UN want to grab control, when that control right now is only being used for laissez faire? Because they want to /stop/ the laissez faire!

China wants to take down Tibetan and Falun Gong sites. Germany wants to ban neonazis from the internet. The arab nations would want to kick off Israel until it “fulfils its international obligations”. Etc etc. This is nothing less than an attempt to stuff the information genie back into its bottle.

At all costs, they must be prevented from claiming the spurious moral high ground! Confront them with the question: what would you change? And, why not go through process at ICANN? What would you want to do, that they would refuse? And why?

Good questions, and I bet neither the EU or UN have good answers. The US made the Internet. The US controls the Internet. And the Internet is arguably the most powerful and free form of communication ever invented. Why the heck should it be changed?
