Spiderman 2

It’s tough to write a review of a movie that is so completely excellent. At least for me it is, but that may be because of my sharply critical mind, barbed tongue, and unforgiving gaze. Anyway, I’ll sum up this movie in one short sentence:

Best comic book movie ever made. Period.

So, this means if you like comic book movies, or even if you can only marginally tolerate them, you will most likely really enjoy this movie. I’ll definitely be seeing this movie again before it leaves the theaters.

For what it’s worth, it has a 95% rating on rottentomatoes.com.

Pros: Bruce Campbell (!), great plot, great acting, complex emotions (for an action flick), good message (!), great directing, fantastic CGI, advances the series but still is a movie by itself, exciting action sequences, well done romance/drama subplots, did I say Bruce Campbell already?
Cons: It ends.

  1. My favorite scence was the second major cameo….that was a bit of a secret message if you knew what you were looking at! The guy in the elevator who talks to Spiderman about his suit is “Michael” from Queer As Folk. Michael is a gay man who is comic book crazy and opens his own store. There are several episodes discussing the gay influences on comic books, one where Michael lectures at a college about it. One of the major themes of superheros is how they have a hidden identity that cannot be shown to the world. There is a lot of evidence that the strong emotion expressed in comic books directly relating to people not being able to come out. And apparently Sam Raimi / Stan Lee decided to confirm part of that by having Michael do a cameo in Spiderman. There is absolutely no way Sam Raimi would have put that actor in that scene in the movie without specific intent.
