The EU decided to slap a huge fine on Microsoft. Why? Because it “abus[ed] its ‘near monopoly.'” I thought this was rather amusing. Unless EU anti-trust laws are significantly different from our own, it’s as if Microsoft got punished for almost breaking the law. “You guys aren’t quite a monopoly, but you’re close enough! Give us money!”
Anyway, the fine seems huge ($613 million), but that’s only 1% of Microsoft’s **cash** reserves, which is $53 billion total. Of course, Gates and Co. are going to appeal the decision.
