WinIE hole and viruses
Here is yet another reason why I’m glad I use a Mac. Apparently, there is a huge hole in the security of Windows Internet Explorer that allows files to be spoofed to whatever the author wants. For example, you could go to a site, download what you think is a totally harmless PDF, select it to be automatically opened, and in fact you are launching an application that engages in malicious behavior on your machine. The article also speculates that this may be an unfixable problem in IE because a variant of the security hole has been known since 2001. Either Microsoft is being very lax in its trustworthy computing initiative or it might not be able to fix this problem. The article does say one way to prevent this problem is to never have IE automatically open a file. Of course, this is good advice, but how many people will ever know about this problem?
Also, I don’t have to worry about MyDoom. I just have to deal with occasional spam (only 2 so far) and SPU’s email servers getting hammered.
